Mackay Pet Rescue supporting regional communities through animal welfare

Mackay Pet Rescue Incorporated (MPRI) is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organisation delivering vital animal rescue services across the Mackay region and surrounding mining communities, including Moranbah, Emerald and Bowen.

For more than five years, MPRI’s foster carers have opened their homes to animals that have been abandoned, neglected, surrendered due to hardship, or found roaming local streets. At any time, the organisation is caring for around 80 cats, kittens and dogs, all placed in private foster homes. Foster carers are fully supported, with MPRI providing food, veterinary care and essential supplies.

Since its inception, MPRI has re-homed more than 900 animals and operates under a no-euthanasia policy where practicable. All animals are microchipped, desexed, vaccinated and medically treated prior to adoption, ensuring long-term welfare outcomes.

The organisation’s work extends beyond rescue operations. MPRI regularly supports vulnerable members of the community, including individuals experiencing homelessness or domestic violence, by providing pet food and parasite treatments, helping people keep their companion animals during periods of crisis.

A significant proportion of animals entering care come from regional and mining areas, where roaming pets, backyard breeding and limited access to veterinary services remain ongoing challenges. Volunteers routinely collect animals from mine sites and remote communities, where pets are often left behind.

Mackay Pet Rescue receives no government or council funding and relies entirely on public donations, fundraising initiatives, grants and the support of local businesses. Increasingly, animals are entering care requiring urgent veterinary treatment, placing further strain on the organisation’s resources.

As regional growth continues through mining and industrial development, the need for responsible community partnerships becomes increasingly important. Corporate and industry support enables MPRI to expand desexing programs, respond more quickly to calls for assistance in remote areas, and ensure no animal is left behind.

Mackay Pet Rescue is proud to serve the region and welcomes opportunities to collaborate with industry partners who share a commitment to community wellbeing and animal welfare.
