Managing Director, Whitehaven Coal

Paul is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Whitehaven Coal Limited having been appointed in March 2013. Paul served as an independent director on the Board for twelve months prior to his current role having played in integral part in the acquisition of the Maules Creek development via the merger of Whitehaven Coal and Aston Resources.

Paul has presided over a significant growth period at Whitehaven Coal, quadrupling the company’s output during this period with the commissioning of the Narrabri underground mine and the construction and ramp up of the Maules Creek open cut mine. During this period, Paul has led the assembly of a unique development pipeline that can further double the current production to 50mtpa within the next 10 years.

Paul has extensive experience in the mining, energy and infrastructure sectors gained through 20 years as a professional advisor at Ernst & Young, where he was the Managing Partner of the Sydney office and a member of the Oceania executive team and serviced many of the firms’ largest clients in these sectors.

As a strong advocate for the sector, Paul contributes to a number of important industry advocacy positions and policy roles as an informed and valuable contributor including the following:

  • Chair of NSW Minerals Council
  • Director of Minerals Council of Australia
  • Director of LETA
  • Director of Coal Industry Advisory Board advising the International Energy Agency
  • Federal Government appointed Member of Resources 2030 Taskforce

Paul has a Bachelor of Commerce from University of Newcastle and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia.
