Mining systems’ productivity is dependent on mechanical equipment availability. Strategies designed to de-risk production and assure availability are important and especially so in challenging market conditions. Progressive CBM and RCM risk management strategies are increasingly including proactive techniques to de-risk operations and improve asset availability. Maintenance and reliability strategies that are simple in design and application generally deliver the best outcomes within the mining industry. By contrast, complex strategies utilizing moving parts or electronic controls and monitoring can frequently introduce secondary problems, additional maintenance complexity and often do not deliver the intended results. Mag-Shield magnetic filtration is a proactive strategy that reduces total cost of ownership without moving parts, electronic support, monitoring or additional maintenance routines.

85% of hydraulic system failures are classified as random, can be very costly, are associated with lengthy outages and are often followed by repeat failures. Factors contributing to these failures are: the limitations of oil analysis routines to provide timely predictions for acute hydraulic failures and inability to pinpoint failure location when failures do occur; the limited ability of media filtration to capture smaller particulates and inability to contain large quantities of contamination during failure events; and residual contamination following repair and flushing procedures. Fluid cleanliness and contamination control is an area that continues to demonstrate significant gains for equipment availability. Utilizing high-energy magnetic scrubbing, the Mag-Shield system reduces failure hydraulic component failure rates, effectively mitigates common failures and improves component life as demonstrated by field results. By strategically placing magnetic filtration in the system reservoir, all returning oil is effectively filtered before flowing into any suction ports.

This presentation will review the genesis of Mag-Shield magnetic filtration, its role in upgrading existing filtration, review of actual installations and summarize
actual mine site outcomes.
