Jan Norberger

General Manager, Workforce Strategy & Industry Engagement, Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance

Jan has a broad range of executive experience across a variety of industry sectors, including 12 years in leadership roles for private training providers in the vocational education and training (VET) space.

With a background in mining, transport, aviation and defence, he is a passionate connector of industry and the VET sector and has first-hand in providing support, and navigating through change, innovation, and disruption.

Within the Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance, Jan is primarily accountable for workforce planning, industry stewardship and leading stakeholder engagement by developing robust relationships and partnerships with key industry, Commonwealth and state government representatives, and a broad range of other stakeholders.

He provides leadership on skills and workforce challenges, such as reskilling and upskilling workers to meet emerging industry needs and jobs in demand, to ensure the VET system meets employer needs by equipping learners with the necessary skills across a broad range of career pathways.

In doing so, this role is responsible for implementing evidence-based initiatives and reforms to promote the development of an appropriately skilled workforce to support further growth, development and adaptability in Australia’s mining and automotive industries.

Jan started his career serving in the Royal Australian Air Force, where he received an Officer Commanding Commendation for outstanding professionalism and service beyond the call of duty.

He has held a variety of senior management positions within both large and small businesses in WA and abroad (East Timor) and in 2012 was awarded a WA Business News 40Under40 award in recognition of his career achievements.

In 2013 Jan was elected to the Western Australian state parliament as the Member for Joondalup, later being promoted to Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Planning and Disability Services and serving four years on its Economics and Industry Standing Committee.
